What this tool estimates

It counts the words in your text and divides by a reading speed to estimate how long the piece takes to read. The default is 225 words per minute, the average for adults reading online. Switch to slow (150) or fast (300) to match your audience. It also estimates speaking time at 130 words per minute, which is a comfortable pace for reading aloud.

Why reading speed varies

Most adults read between 150 and 300 words per minute depending on the material and how closely they're reading. Dense technical writing pulls the number down, light articles push it up. Speaking is slower than silent reading because you're forming each word out loud, which is why the speaking estimate uses a lower rate.

Where it helps

Bloggers add a "5 min read" label to set expectations. Speakers check whether a script fits a time slot. Teachers gauge how long a passage takes a class to get through. It pairs naturally with a word counter when you're writing to a target length, and everything runs in your browser.
